The overall design concept for the Grimsby commemorative pendant is based on the shape of a coin. This shape is a tangible representation of a "cent" from the Latin word "centum" meaning "one hundred" notably also the root word in centennial.
The front of the pendant portrays an image of water and sun. These symbolically mean so much to so many. For us and we hope for others, an all-important presence: Lake Ontario's mass, grandeur, and beauty. How fortunate we are in Grimsby to live, work and play upon its banks. The rising sun over the lake is a significant motif not only as a symbol of light but also time. This is something to celebrate in our centennial year, 100 years is a momentous passing of time.
We wanted to work with the theme of place and space and chose to represent that visually, on the pendant's reverse side, with a compass rose. A beautiful symbol of navigation, guidance, orientation, and inspiration. Grimsby's coordinates are depicted to serve as a punctuation mark of position and location illustrating our little spot on the map.
We are proud to have been able to create an artifact to serve as a memorial in the celebration of Grimsby’s centennial year.
